History of the Groove
Pandora's Groove, based in Oshkosh, WI is the only live act of its kind in the region. With influences that range from the traditional steel band standards from Trinidad and Tobago, to pop standards from Bob Marley, Jason Mraz, and Jack Johnson. A similar characteristic in all PG tunes is their "danceablility." The group was formed in 2001 under the direction of then UWO percussion instructor, Dr. Payton MacDonald. It started as an all-authentic traditional steel drum band much like the ones found on the islands in the Caribbean, especially on Trinidad, where this music originated. The band consisted of 10 or more people in order to fill out all the parts including the "engine room" or percussive based rhythm section featuring a brake drum. Today the band is about 8 members strong but has lost none of it potency. All members of PG have earned or are earning Bachelor's Degrees in Music with various emphases, proving that the players have professional experience and a superior musical understanding, attitude, and background. Pandora's Groove is a Soca-Pop hybrid with a repertory and dynamic range like no other band in the tri-state area. The band is refreshingly unique, and employs many recognizable songs, appealing to an extremely wide audience. Each performance is a one-of-a-kind creation appealing to audiences of all ages and groups. They are handled very professionally and are well-rehearsed. All tunes performed by PG employ the steel drums and many other authentic percussion instruments. This leads to the authentic representation of traditional soca tunes, or the invigoration and island twist of "the same old rock songs." The group is capable of any indoor or outdoor arrangement and venue. Pandora's Groove can be enjoyed as quiet background music, a formidable frontline act, or anything in between; always with the ability to seduce its audience to dance. |
